Problems?!

Studying a scripture in the Book of Mormon a while back gave me thoughts as to what causes so many problems among people!?!? The scripture that brought this pondering to me is in Alma 50:21: ". . . for it has been their quarrelings and their contentions, yea, their murderings, and their plunderings, their idolatry, their whoredoms, and their abominations, which were among themselves, which brought upon them their wars and destructions."  Yes, it is a rather negative scripture, but it made me stop and think about  why so many problems occur. And the more I thought about it the more that the word "selfishness" kept popping into my thoughts. Many, if not most, of these problems are caused by selfishness! It is rather logical that problems, like these, among people are caused many times because they are more worried about "What's in this for me?" rather than "How can I help make things better?". Seriously if you stop and think about it, selfishness creates many (and most)  of the problems we have in the world. And, yes, it is very negative, BUT we can also look at it another way! What can we learn from it? Can we stop looking at "What is in this for me?" and start saying, "What can I do to make things better?" Can we quit pointing the finger at all the things that others are doing wrong and look inside ourselves and change what is wrong within us? After all, none of the things the people were doing in that scripture was helping them become better people! And no one of them could make the other better without first changing themselves. We CANNOT change others through force, but we can certainly set a good example that might just make them stop and think a bit more. After all selfishness never creates happy peaceful joyful hearts! But living the "Golden Rule" can create a happier, more peaceful and joyful person that CAN help create a happier, more peaceful, and more joyful family, neighborhood, community, country, nation, and world!!!
