From Crawling to Flying! Easy?

The other day I shared a thought on my facebook page that has really had me thinking and so I wanted to delve into it a bit deeper. The thought was this "You were born with wings. Why prefer to crawl through life?" by Rumi. I like this thought, but I also think many people could be discouraged by it. And some may not be able to see past the reality part of it. So may I just take a few minutes and add some of my own thoughts about this.

In reality we are not born with wings, but I do not believe that was the point. I believe the point was that we were meant to rise above our mundane normal and become the best we can become. That would be equal to the analogy of flying because by flying we reach high above all earthly things. Our mundane earthly being is crawling through life not being able to enjoy the beauty of the view from above. And if it came to crawling or flying, which would you choose?

So, yes, of course, you want to fly, but how? It's not just like jumping off a cliff and suddenly you are flying high like an eagle. My added comment on the post was "I totally agree that flying is better, but crawling is still forward movement because for some of us it takes longer to figure out how to use those wings, just like a baby bird." I do not mean to be negative about his thought. IT has a lot of positive to it, but it also can be discouraging to the person who struggles to just put one foot in front of the other. And nowadays there are many people facing that. Even a baby bird, who is born with wings, does not immediately take off flying. Baby birds need to learn and mature until their bodies and abilites are ready to fly.

Again, I totally like the thought of flying, BUT I also am very grateful to know that as long as I am moving, even at a crawl,  I am moving forward. And if it takes me days, weeks, months or even years longer to learn to fly than it does my neighbor, my friend or even my sister, at least I have not given up and I am still moving forward!!

And another thought that just came to me. Flying in many ways is awesome because you can see so much below you. But sometimes we get too far away from the things that really matter when we are so high. Crawling may be slower and not as neat and exciting, BUT you can see the world from a different point of view. You can get really close and personal with rocks, flowers, trees, that lady bug that just flew by and, well, you get the point.

So in conclusion, yes, our final destination should be one that is high above the world, in other words flying above it all. But we should also be patient with ourselves as, like a child, we learn to crawl, to walk, to run, and eventually use those wings to help us fly. and while we are learning and progressing through those different phases of learning to fly, let's enjoy the things that are close around us. That way when we ARE finally flying we can remember all the beautiful things that brought us to that point.
